Ammonium sulfate Physical properties Ammonium sulfate appears as colorless crystals or white granules, odorless. CAS number 7783-20-2. It has a density of 1.77 and a refractive index of 1.521 The solubility of ammonium sulfate in water is 70.6g at 0ºC and 103.8g at 10ºC. It is insoluble in ethanol and acetone, but has a high solubility in water, and the aqueous solution is acidic with a of 5.5. Chemical properties Ammonium sulfate will completely decompose into ammonia, nitrogen, sulfur dioxide, and water when heated above 51ºC. It is hygroscopic and easily cakes after absorbing moisture. Ammonium sulfate releases ammonia gas when reacted with alkaline substances, and forms barium precipitate when reacted with barium chloride solution. Uses Fertilizer: Ammonium sulfate is an excellent nitrogen fertilizer, suitable for various soils and crops. It can promote vigorous foliage growth, improve fruit quality and yield, and enhance the crop's resistance to disasters. It can be used as a base fertilizer, top dressing, seedling fertilizer. Industrial uses: Ammonium sulfate is also used in the textile, leather, and pharmaceutical industries. For example, it is commonly used in purification processes. Rare earth mining: Ammonium sulfate is used as a raw material in rare earth mining, extracting rare earth elements from ores through ion exchange.
